Hello, welcome to my pottery.

My name is Ian Murdoch, I am a potter and I live and work in the countryside in the Scottish Borders.

The pottery I make tries to strike a balance between the practical and the artistic.

I like the idea of something being of use: a plate to eat from, a bottle to display flowers or contain wine; a jug from which to pour milk or water.

But I am also intrigued by a decorated pot’s ability to say to the world “here I am” or “this is my place”, whether it be on a mantelpiece, a kitchen table or in an office or gallery.

Making the space it inhabits feel alive, eloquently filled, it’s form and decoration pleasing to the eye, the heart and the soul.

I also run pottery classes for small groups and individuals.

Within an informal creative environment, I encourage people to learn through hands on participation and develop skills, confidence and artistic ability

The classes are fun, relaxed, and enjoyable.

I teach a variety of hand building techniques, with a regular opportunity for everyone to try throwing on the wheel, if you so wish.

The sessions are one and a half to two hours long, held in the evening, morning or afternoon with cakes and scones served to encourage discussion of work and ideas.
